Independent Bookmakers UK
Bookmakers that hold their own licence and share it with no other brand — and how to verify it yourself.
An independent bookmaker holds its own Gambling Commission licence and shares it with nobody. No sister sites, no group-wide account policy, no shared wallet.
Most of the UK market is not like this. Across the 129 licence accounts we track, thirty-nine licensees carry more than one brand, and the largest carries eighty-nine — the customer sees eighty-nine websites, the regulator sees one company. Independents are the exception, and the reason people look for them is usually simple: they want an account that is not governed by a decision made about them somewhere else in a group.
What “independent” does and does not get you
It does mean separate ownership, separate terms, and pricing set by that firm rather than a central trading desk. It does not mean lighter regulation. Every operator listed on this site, independent or not, holds a current Gambling Commission licence and is bound by the same rules on funds protection, advertising and self-exclusion.
How to check whether a bookmaker is genuinely independent
Find the licensee name in the site footer, then look that company up on the Gambling Commission public register. The register lists every trading name on that account. One trading name means independent. A list means you have found a group, and our operator index will show you the rest of it.
Independence is a property of the licence, not the group
Two brands can be owned by the same listed company and still sit on separate licence accounts — and that distinction is the one that reaches your account. Virgin Bet and LiveScore Bet are both in the LiveScore group, and each holds its own account; neither has a sister brand on it. A decision taken about you by one licensee does not automatically travel to the other, because the licensee is the entity you contracted with.
So a brand can be independent in the sense that matters here — alone on its licence — while still having a corporate parent. What it cannot have is a sibling sharing its licence conditions, its terms framework and its self-exclusion. That is what the list below is.
Which markets independents survive in
Not evenly. Of the 99 betting brands indexed here, 26 hold an account with no other brand on it. Of the 65 bingo brands, none do — the bingo index is the most consolidated set on the site, and a standalone online bingo licence is close to extinct. If you are looking for an operator that is genuinely on its own, betting is where they are.

Questions
What is an independent bookmaker?
A bookmaker that holds its own Gambling Commission licence account with no other trading name on it — so it has no sister sites. It may still have a corporate parent; what it does not have is a sibling sharing its licence conditions and self-exclusion.
How many independent bookmakers are there in the UK?
This index tracks 45 brands whose licence account carries no other brand we document, out of 483 in total. 26 of them are betting brands — the vertical where standalone licensees are most common.
Are independent bookmakers safe?
Safety comes from the licence, not the size. Any operator on the Gambling Commission register is bound by the same licence conditions, dispute resolution rules and GAMSTOP obligations as the biggest groups.
Why choose an independent over a big group?
Usually pricing and account treatment. Independents set their own limits rather than applying a group-wide policy, and a restriction at one group brand does not carry across automatically — though GAMSTOP still covers everything.
